Back to School Letter

Dear Mills Students and Parents:

The staff and I are very anxious for the 2012 – 13 school year to begin, and we hope you are too.  We have planned a special parent informational meeting for Monday, August 20.  On this day parents and students will meet the teacher for a few minutes and then the students will go to the gymnasium for a meeting while the parents stay in the room with the teacher and she will go over goals and expectations for the school year. You will go directly to your child’s classroom at the designated time.  It is very important that you attend this meeting.  This is not an open house format.   After you meet with the teacher you are invited to tour the building by visiting the library, cafeteria, art room, music room, etc.  The bus transportation director will be available to answer any questions you may have about transportation and you may pay for lunches in the office.  Times are as follows:  Kindergarten meeting 3:00 p.m., First Grade meeting 3:45 p.m. and Second Grade meeting 4:30 p.m.

Our first day of school will be on Tuesday, August 21.  The earliest time a student may arrive is 7:30 a.m. when a supervisor is on duty.  We begin serving breakfast at7:30 a.m.in the cafeteria and students may go to their classrooms at 7:50 a.m.  School begins promptly at 7:55 a.m.   Students will be counted tardy if they are not in the classroom by 7:55 a.m.  School will be dismissed at 3:10 p.m.  Monday through Thursday.  School will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m. every Friday.  Please remember that students are not to be dropped off in front of the school.  This drive is reserved for school buses only.  Parents may enter the semi-circle drive off School Road and drop students off at the end of the building.  Mrs. DeMott will be there to help the children out of the vehicle.  It is very important that you use School Road to enter the semi-circle.  Please do not use Henderson except to exit. This area gets very congested and by following this route, we can eliminate traffic problems. Cars may pick up students in front of the building after school once the school buses have exited the parking lot.

We would like to remind you that state law prohibits students from attending school if immunizations are not up to date.  Please be sure we have your immunization records prior to school starting or bring them to the Information Meeting on August 20.  There is also a requirement that all kindergarten students need a vision exam performed by a state-licensed optometrist or physician before January 1, 2013.  Our school nurse will be available to answer any questions you may have.

I hope you and your family will find this to be a very rewarding year at Mills.  We strive to keep communication lines open with both parents and teachers working together as a team.  Together we can make this a very successful year for your child.  Please call me if there is anything I can do to help you.  I look forward to meeting you on Monday, August 20th at our informational meeting.

 Sincerely,

Veronica Smith
